The Future of Child Care: A Conversation with Congressman Ro Khanna and Wendy Doyle, President and CEO of United WE

During this virtual fireside chat, Congressman Ro Khanna, Wendy Doyle, President and CEO of United WE, and Elliot Haspel, Director, Climate and Young Children at Capita, will talk about child care and its role in the economy, for women, and for family flourishing.

Speakers:

Congressman Ro Khanna represents California's 17th Congressional District, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, and is serving his fourth term.

Rep. Khanna serves on the House Armed Services Committee as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technologies and Information Systems (CITI), as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, a member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, and on the Oversight and Accountability Committee, where he previously chaired the Environmental Subcommittee.

As a leading progressive in the House, Rep, Khanna is working to restore American manufacturing and technology leadership, improve the lives of working people, and advance U.S. leadership on climate, human rights, and diplomacy around the world.


Wendy Doyle is the President and CEO of United WE. During her ten-year tenure at United WE, Wendy has led the organization to invest in research, advocacy, and policy solutions to remove economic barriers for women, including conducting 26 meaningful research studies, advocating for issues resulting in 54 policy actions, and supporting more than 190+ women in securing civic appointments. Wendy advocates for reforms that honor the legacies of women, and contributes to policy solutions that advance equal pay, paid family leave, affordable childcare and occupational licensing, among others.


Elliot Haspel is Director, Climate and Young Children at Capita. He specializes in early childhood & education issues and the intersection between early childhood development and climate change. He most recently served as the Senior Program Officer for Early Childhood Education at the Robins Foundation. Among other accomplishments, Elliot conceived of and helped raise over $7 million for the Child Care NEXT philanthropic initiative, and helped spearhead the launch of the 100-member strong Virginia Funders Network.

Elliot is the author of Crawling Behind: America’s Childcare Crisis and How to Fix It. He has appeared on television as an analyst, including on The PBS Newshour with Judy Woodruff and MSNBC’S American Voices with Alicia Menendez. His writings have appeared in a variety of top publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic. In 2021, Elliot was invited to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives on the care economy.
